As the end of the year draws close, we invite you to consider lending financial support to a new theatre company in North Hollywood that is dedicated to producing as much work as humanly possible. When we wrote in our mission statement "... to work together as one, passionately and professionally, in creating truly remarkable theatre," I'm not sure any of us really comprehended what we were committing ourselves to. Yet we have proven that commitment time and again, bringing a staggering array of productions to the public.

Our output belies the financial realities of producing theatre, particularly in a town such as Los Angeles. We are a dues-paying company, and we depend heavily upon our box office returns. It never quite seems like enough to really provide the kind of experiences we strive for. Somehow, against all odds, we manage. Chalk it up to the theatrical ethic of "The Show Must Go On!" and the financial support of our angels, without whom none of this would be possible.

A word about the different level designations: At its heart, theatre is storytelling. In that long and glorious storytelling tradition, we have designated each donor level with one of the dramatic character archetypes as delineated by the great folklorist Joseph Campbell. The quotations under each heading come from the book The Writer's Journey by Christopher Vogler and serve to define each archetype named.

The Trickster: $50 - $99 "The Trickster archetype embodies the energies of mischief and desire for change."

  • Acknowledgement of your contribution on the Theatre Unleashed website and in all programs
  • Entry into our annual drawing for a copy of a script autographed by the cast and crew of an original play produced by Theatre Unleashed
The Shapeshifter: $100 - $499 "The Shapeshifter is also a catalyst for change, a symbol of the psychological urge to transform."
  • All benefits above
  • Two complementary tickets to a Theatre Unleashed production* of your choice (a $40 value)
The Threshold Guardian: $500 - $999 "Successful heroes learn to recognize Threshold Guardians not as threatening enemies, but as useful Allies and early indicators that new power or success is coming."
  • All benefits above
  • A total of four complementary tickets to a Theatre Unleashed production* of your choice (an $80 value)
The Herald: $1,000 - $2,499 "Heralds provide motivation, offer the hero a challenge, and get the story rolling."
  • All benefits above
  • A total of six complementary tickets to a Theatre Unleashed production* of your choice (a $120 value)
  • Your own copy of our year-end scrapbook, containing behind-the-scenes pictures and production stills of the current season (a $40 value)
The Mentor: $2,500 - $4,999 "Mentor figures, whether encountered in dreams, fairy tales, myths, or screenplays, stand for the hero's highest aspirations."
  • All benefits above
  • A total of six complementary tickets to a Theatre Unleashed production* of your choice (a $120 value)
  • A one-quarter-page ad (business or personal) in all Theatre Unleashed programs for one full year
The Hero: $5,000+ "A Hero is someone who is willing to sacrifice his own needs on behalf of others, like a shepherd who will sacrifice to protect and serve his flock."
  • All benefits above
  • A total of six complementary tickets to a Theatre Unleashed production* of your choice (a $120 value)
  • An "Associate Producer" credit in all Theatre Unleashed programs for a full year
  • A half-page ad (business, or personal) in all Theatre Unleashed programs for one full year

Note: The above support levels apply to in-kind contributions as well!

Theatre Unleashed is a California Non-Profit Corporation currently wrapping up its 501(c)(3) federal tax exemption application. We do have a full non-profit corporation acting as our fiscal receiver in the interim, so your contributions are tax-exempt! Please contact us for the details, in order to make sure all the financial ducks are in a row.

If you would like to discuss sponsorship opportunities, please contact Andrew Moore, President of Theatre Unleashed.

* A "Theatre Unleashed production" is defined as any production with a continuous run that extends beyond one week, and excludes any fund raising activities (there are no comps for fundraisers).

Holiday Hangover An Anthology for the Seasonally AffectedOpening weekend has passed and we are down to our last two performances of Holiday Hangover. Friends keep asking me if I'm having fun. -- Yes, of course I'm having fun, but it's still not really where I'm the happiest. I've returned to the booth for a couple of our late night shows (Die Gruppe in GBLT and Tales of An Unsettled City: Exodus) and that is truly where I belong. I have no regrets, I'm glad I did it. Do I love it as much as my actor friends? No, absolutely not, but that's alright. For most of the them the thought of working a light and sound board is terrifying or boring so I think that makes us even! We all have things we love, for me it's not acting, it's the technical side.

Erin ScottSo if you haven't yet, come see Holiday Hangover. Tonight and tomorrow night may be your last chance to see me on stage with the lights on for a very long time. If you don't come for me, come to see the rest of the amazing cast I'm thrilled to be performing with, they truly are some of the most talented people I know.

Valley Theatre League recognizes almost all of the company’s original Main Stage shows from 2008 and 2009, from actors to writers to designers and more.

LOS ANGELES – Theatre Unleashed is proud to announce that it has been nominated in six different categories in this year’s Valley Theatre League Artistic Director Achievement Awards, for original shows produced by the rapidly growing company in its first two years. The winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony Monday, Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the West Valley Playhouse in Canoga Park.

Pin-Up Girls, an original play by Andrew Moore that explored the world of 1940s burlesque dancers, is nominated for Best Original Play. Brian Gaston, who played bumbling-in-love horn player Bottles in the show, is nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Starlet Jacobs is nominated for Best Set Design for the show as well.

Moore is also nominated for Best Author-Original Play for his show Tracing Sonny, a romantic dramedy about how the baggage we carry from childhood can dominate our personal relationships as adults. Yelena Babinskaya is also nominated from the show for Best Lighting Design.

“This is an incredible validation of the work we strive to do,” said Moore, who is also the company’s president. “We have much respect for the other nominees. They have created a rich and fertile theatrical ecology in North Hollywood, which is no small part of why we chose this community as our residence. To be nominated alongside them is a thrill and an honor for this young company.”

Friends Like These, an intense drama about teen violence and one of the company’s most popular shows (along with Pin-Up Girls), is nominated for Best Ensemble Cast. The show, which played to sellout crowds, will return for a brief run January 15, 2010.

“We’ve tried to create an environment in which a person’s vision can flourish and grow through collaboration with no one person pushing the buttons,” said Artistic Director Phillip Kelly. “It’s led to a very diverse couple of seasons that will continue into our third. I’m proud of the people nominated, but I think each of them can easily say they were one part of a whole and that’s why their talents shined as brightly as they did; they left their ego at the door.”

Andrew Moore, President of Theatre UnleashedIn true fashion, Theatre Unleashed is not going to let 2009 get away without packing in as many performances of as many shows as possible! Take a break from the holiday hustle and join us for an evening of comedy, drama, and general hobnobbing with your fellow theatre-goers.

Holiday Hangover: An Anthology for the Seasonally Affected runs through December 12th. It is “Pay What You Like,” and we encourage you to bring an unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots. We'll have a good time commiserating about a time of year we love to hate. Bring a date! It's cool. We're not your flesh-and-blood, so we promise not to get all judge-y.

The final chapter of Tales of an Unsettled City draws to a close this month. Subtitles Exodus, it deals with “where we are going and why, as well as how we feel about where we’ve been,” a perfect theme for the end of the year. At turns dramatic and sardonic, Director Carlos Martinez has saved the best for last.

Due to popular demand, our Sketch Comedy series Die Grüppe brings back GLBT: Gays, Lettuce, Bacon and Tomato. This risqué and hilarious take on what it means to be straight in a post-gay society has packed the house in its previous engagements. “Playing Horse” made me laugh until I cried – both times I saw the show.

Our Cheap and Easy series continues as Theatre Unleashed presents Cheap and Easy Neighborhood Magicians. Avoid the cover charges and drink minimums and valet, etc. and pay one low price for an evening of entertainment! Oh – and you don’t have to wear a coat and tie to enjoy this evening of stage magic!

As we look back on 2009, we find an incredible output –- twenty-three productions, ranging from one-off fundraising events to full-blown Main Stage productions. The thought occurs, “How are we to outdo ourselves in the future?” Indeed, who knows what the future holds? The immediate future will be made known shortly, as we announce our 2010 season. But beyond that, Theatre Unleashed has some incredible plans in the making. New areas of expansion, new audiences to entertain, and new friends and collaborators to be made. One thing is for certain: We are in this for the long haul. We look forward to inviting you back to our house in the coming year, and for many years yet to come.

Holiday Hangover an Anthology for the Seasonally AffectedMaybe, just maybe I do like this whole acting thing. Don't get too excited I don't like it enough to leave my place in the booth, but I did have a lot of fun tonight and am really starting to look forward to our opening night tomorrow. Everything kind of fell into place today. I can see now from the actor's point of view how sometimes it really does seem like the miracle of live theatre will never happen. When I walked in to the theatre tonight we still had a lot to finish. It was significantly farther along than when I left the night before thanks to several hard working TU peeps who stayed into the wee hours of the night working. But there was still quite a bit to do tonight. We started over an hour later than we intended and only had one audience member, but it went well and we are absolutely ready for tomorrow night.

Erin ScottI'm having a bit of a hard time drawing the line between being an actor and being the production manager. At one point in the couple hours before we started the show, Andrew, the director, looked at me as I was helping him hang, cable and focus the last couple lights and said "You don't have to do this, you're an actor." Without even thinking I replied, "No, I'm a production manager." Where else would I be, I can't just sit there and watch other people work on technical things. I find myself worrying about things during the show and have to remind myself to let it go, to enjoy the experience of being on the stage and not in a room above it. I've learned a lot from it. I am a firm believer that every actor should at least once in their acting life stage manage a show, now I'm starting to believe that every stage manager should at least once in their tech career act on a stage. Will I ever return to it -- I can't say yet, for now I'll enjoy the opportunity, the people, and the magic of being part of the performance!

The fourth and final installment of the wildly popular Theatre Unleashed late-night theatre series, Tales of an Unsettled City: Exodus examines where we are going and why, as well as how we feel about where we’ve been. This series of short comedic and dramatic vignettes explores the many definitions of the term “exodus” and the unique consequences and possibilities each possesses for anyone and everyone ready to move on to the unforeseeable future.

Still not convinced...

Holiday Hangover An Anthology for the Seasonally AffectedI don't think it's really hit me that I'm actually in a show. No that's not true it has, I think what I can't figure it out is how it happened. Last weekend was the closing weekend of our last mainstage show, Landscaping The Den of Saints, while I sat in the booth watching their final performance it began to sink in that the next time we open a show I'll be one of the actors. I'm still not sure how I feel about that. It's still a place I'm not really comfortable being. I like my behind the scenes presence, the thought of being on stage makes me a bit nervous. All of that aside, rehearsals are going well. We have one more until our tech rehearsal and then we open a week from Thursday. That seems a bit crazy at the moment.

Erin ScottIt will be a great show, I'm sure of that. I'm excited to see the other pieces, to see everything come together. I'm still working on the getting excited because I'm in the show. Everyone keeps telling me I'll love it, that I'll want to do it again. I'm still not convinced of that, I'm sure I'll have fun, but I'm not so sure about acting again after this. So far it's been a great experience, but it just doesn't seem to jump out at me like other things in theater do. Maybe I'll feel differently after tech and opening next week, but for now I think I still prefer the technical side of things!
